Northwest Coulee Country: Quincy Wildlife Area, Potholes Coulee, and Babcock Bench

Hard to believe it but most of the Northwest's landscapes are composed of sage brush deserts, arid lava flows, and dried up water channels called coulees. Late winter and early spring are great times to go exploring in coulee country because it is not scotching hot, the ticks are not out yet, and there is a short bloom of wildflowers and green grass before desert climates take over in the summer. This was a single day trip in early March through Quincy Wildlife Area, which is located in Grant County's Columbia Basin. It is a great area to see the layers of Columbia River Flood Basalts and walk the path of ice age cataclysmic floods. I hope you enjoy it just as much as we did.
