Drinking Water in Melville, Biodegradable Mardi Gras Beads, 600 Year Old Canoes | 2/8/19 | LSWI
LPB’s Natasha Williams takes a look at the outdated drinking water system in rural Melville in St. Landry Parish. Melville has a water system that is antiquated by today’s standards, and is considered to be among the worst in the state. How long can Melville continue to use this system?
LPB’s Andre’ Moreau talks with a molecular biologist at LSU who is refining the process used to make biodegradable Mardi Gras beads. The key ingredient is algae with the hope that within several years, this effort could prevent tens of thousands of pounds of plastic beads and trinkets from entering the environment.
In this segment, we have an update on a pair of 600 year old dugout canoes, one found near Shreveport and the other found near Donaldsonville. Restoration of these artifacts continues at Texas A&M University. When will they be ready for the public to see? Charles Jones has the story.
