Michael Shayne, Private Detective - The Body In The Trunk (April 23, 1945)

Michael Shayne, private detective was created during the late 1930s by writer Brett Halliday. The character appeared in a series of twelve films starring Lloyd Nolan, a radio series under a variety of titles between 1944 and 1953, and later in 1960-1961 in a thirty two episode NBC television series starring Richard Denning in the title role. Jeff Chandler and Wally Maher were among the actors who starred as Shayne in a weekly radio series. A hard bitten detective drama, featuring the world weary, and often bitter Michael Shayne.

Shayne, a reckless Irishman still grieving after the brutal murder of his wife, is one of the tougher, bleaker detectives to stalk through a gumshoe whodunit, tracking down his quarry through the dark underbelly of the American dream following World War II. Drug dealers, adulterers, cheats and thieves, all fell to Shayne's wit, determination, or fists. This resonated with audiences to a great degree, and led to a long series, as well as an adaptation into television.
