Night Mode MAX on iPhone: The Hidden Setting for Better Photos

Night mode on iPhone can take stunning low light photos — but most people never use its best setting. Here's how to unlock Night Mode Max for dramatically better results.

Your iPhone automatically turns on Night Mode in low-light situations — you'll see the moon icon turn yellow in the Camera app. But the default exposure is only a few seconds. Night Mode Max pushes that to a full 30-second exposure, pulling in way more light for sharper, brighter photos in dark scenes.

To activate Night Mode Max: long press the moon icon in the Camera app and select Max. Keep your phone completely still — use a tripod, lean it against something, or brace your elbows. The longer exposure means any movement creates blur.

If Night Mode Max doesn't stick between sessions, go to Settings - Camera - Preserve Settings and make sure Night Mode is turned on. That way your camera remembers your preference.

Night Mode Max works on iPhone 11 and later. It's especially powerful for low-light scenes like dimly lit restaurants, evening walks, cityscapes at night, and concerts.
