London walk, Marylebone High Street to School of Economic Science

Today we`ll be exploring Marylebone High Street, Mandeville Place, James Street.

During the late-18th century, the main street became the Marylebone High Street we might recognise today, lined with shops and houses. The Portland Estate leased pieces of land out on 99-year leases, on which builders of all types built according to plans approved by the Estate.

Etymology. The parish took its name from its church, dedicated to St Mary; the original church was built on the bank of a small stream or "bourne", called the Tybourne or Tyburn.

Mandeville Place was built around 1777 and named after the Duke of Manchester (Viscount Mandeville) who lived in nearby Manchester Square.

James Street was laid out around 1761–9. In 1936, the London County Council tried to rename the street Marylebone High Street, along with Thayer Street and Mandeville Place so that the whole north–south route from Oxford Street to Marylebone Road would have the same.

The School of Economic Science was founded in 1938, in the UK, by Andrew MacLaren MP and his son Leon MacLaren, under the name Henry George School of Economics. It was an economics study group that expounded the economic theories of the American economist Henry George.

London School of Economics and Political Science is ranked 49 in QS World University Rankings by TopUniversities and has an overall score of 4.4 stars, according to student reviews on Studyportals, the best place to find out how students rate their study and living experience at universities from all over the world.

Known as the School, LSE first opened its doors in 1895 in three rooms in 9 John Adam Street, close to the Strand in central London. An economic historian, 29-year-old William Hewins, was appointed the first Director.

Mandeville is one of those surnames strongly evocative of nobility, much like Montagu or Cavendish, but while the latter two aristocratic names have their own eponymous garden squares in London’s Marylebone, there is no such Mandeville equivalent.

There is, however, just off Marylebone High Street, the Georgian-era Manchester Square named after the Duke of Manchester, who also went by Viscount Mandeville. This name was then given to the contiguous 18th century-built Mandeville Place, and finally to the Mandeville Hotel, which takes pride of place on this quiet, stately street: a veritable oasis from the nearby Oxford and Bond Streets, which are a few minutes’ walk away but very much out of earshot.
