Trapped in a Thunderstorm on Mount Franklin

Isle Royale: High Stakes, History, and a Race Against the Clouds.

We set out for Mount Franklin with one goal: to see the legendary view that Benjamin Franklin allegedly "stole" for the United States during the Treaty of Paris in 1783. But the island had other plans.

What started as a hike through history quickly turned into a race for survival as a massive Lake Superior thunderstorm rolled in while we were exposed on the Greenstone Ridge. With lightning popping and the wind picking up, the descent became a blur of adrenaline and exhaustion.

Once we finally made it back to the safety of the Rock Harbor Lodge area, we spent our final hours soaking in the quiet "civilized" side of the island before catching the Isle Royale Queen IV back to Copper Harbor.
