New nerve-targeting procedure offers hope for high blood pressure sufferers

Doctors at Atrium Health are using a new FDA-approved procedure called renal artery denervation to help patients lower their blood pressure. The procedure targets certain nerves near the kidney and emits radio frequency waves, burning some of those extra nerves that are causing high blood pressure. Patients who can't tolerate blood pressure medication or their blood pressure remains uncontrolled with medication may qualify for this procedure. The husband, father, and grandfather who suffered a stroke last December is using the procedure to take back control of his blood pressure and his life.
