PM Scott Morrison backed by UK and US on Chinese coercion

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been backed by his UK counterpart Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden on the matter of Chinese coercion at a trilateral meeting as the G7 summit came to a close.

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said the focus of the meeting was supposedly on “securing the Indo-Pacific” but “really it was on China”.

“There was a number of parts of it that referred to China and concerns about the rise of that power … the way they’ve treated Hong Kong, the way they’ve treated the weaker people and, of course, there are concerns around economic coercion,” Mr Clennell said.

He said Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi later expressed concern in a bilateral meeting with Mr Morrison and “let the cat out of the bag” that some leaders were “uncomfortable with the intensity of focus on China”.

Mr Morrison said Mr Draghi “wasn’t referring to any discussions that Australia was involved in”.

“But we had very frank discussions about those issues today, in the Indo-Pacific,” he said.
