GOP leader says president wants to negotiate after reopening

Senate GOP leader John Thune says President Donald Trump is ready to negotiate once Congress reopens the government, calling for patience as the shutdown continues.

Thune told reporters the president is “ready, willing and able” to work with Democrats on health care and budget issues -- but only after lawmakers end the shutdown gridlock in Washington.

The comments came ahead of another round of Senate votes as the standoff entered its latest phase. Thune said both sides need to stay at the table to avoid another disruption.
