Modern Portrait Design Half Face Technique in Canva

In this Canva portrait design tutorial, I show you how to create a half face portrait design in Canva using text cutout effects, background removal, and layering techniques. This Canva photo manipulation tutorial is perfect for posters, social media graphics, and modern portrait typography designs.

I start by importing a side-profile portrait image and duplicating it. I then remove the background from one copy to create a clean overlay of the subject’s head for layering later in the design.

Next, I create vertical typography by writing the word "THINK" down the side of the canvas and saving it as an image. I then use a square image and the Image Cutout app to cut the word "THINK" from the image, creating a text knockout effect in Canva.

After that, I apply Duotone to make the surrounding area of the cutout white, helping the typography stand out clearly. I then carefully crop the text overlay so it aligns with the left side of the portrait.

To finish the design, I add a white rectangle between the original image and the background-removed portrait, creating a clean half-face knockout text effect. The result is a modern, professional portrait design created entirely in Canva.

This Canva graphic design tutorial is ideal for creative portraits, motivational posters, branding graphics, and social media content.
