Esther Abrami: Violinist and Classical Music Influencer | Portrait

Classical music – a genre for the mild mannered and upper class? Not at all! Certainly not according to internationally acclaimed violinist Esther Abrami. She's bringing classical music to a new, primarily younger audience via social media channels. The French-born violinist – who has been at home in Manchester, in northern England for many years now – has grown a huge following across TikTok and other social media platforms with videos about her daily life as a classical musician.

Many of her followers had their first ever exposure to classical music through her channels. As great as she may be at producing videos, Esther Abrami excels in another area: Playing the violin. Her current album has just been released. We met the classical music influencer in Manchester, accompanied her to a rehearsal, peeked over her shoulder on a TikTok shoot, and visited her former school – Chetham's School Of Music. How did Esther Abrami come to make so many people passionate about classical music via TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook?

Esther Abrami was born in 1996 in Aix-en-Provence, France, where she would go on to study violin at the conservatory there. At age 14, she moved to Manchester to attend the prestigious Chetham's School of Music. Beginning in 2017, she studied violin at the Royal Collage of Music in London, and later at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. While Esther Abrami's parents were always interested in culture themselve, they had little connection to classical music – so Abrami had to work out things out for herself. She gave her debut concert as a soloist at the comparatively late age 21.

Esther Abrami rose to prominence mainly as a result of her active contributions to social media, which she built up in parallel to her studies. In her videos she talks about her love of classical music, as well as her everyday life as a musician; giving tips for playing, or seeing how fast she could play a Vivaldi piece, for instance. It was a great success: She now has 417,000 followers on TikTok, 293,000 on YouTube, 277,000 on Instagram, and 151,000 on Facebook. Her current record company was also watching, releasing her eponymous debut album and the EP 'Spotlight' – of pieces exclusively by female composers – in 2022. September 2023 saw the release of her second album, Cinéma. In 2021, Forbes magazine named her 'Best Influential Star'. Esther Abrami plays a violin by 19th-century French violin-maker Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume.
