Honorary Patronage of Judith Butler

Dr. Judith Butler is an internationally renowned academic known for their hugely significant works on political philosophy, ethics, feminist and queer theory.
Their most famous work, Gender Trouble (1990), revolutionised how we think about gender, through its central argument that gender expression is performative - from birth, we are taught to associate certain attitudes and actions with either masculinity or femininity, and we are encouraged to repeat those actions throughout life to assert our masculinity/femininity to others. Essentially, we are performing, or 'doing' gender.
Thirty years on, this argument remains a massively influential work that continues to challenge and inspire.
Butler's work has sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwise and has been translated into over 27 languages. It is taught widely in sociology, philosophy, media and feminist courses across the world.
Butler has been awarded twelve honorary degrees and several of university fellowships in addition to numerous awards for their commitment to defending minority rights.
It was an honour to welcome Dr. Butler to the society in December 2020.
