El Alamein - Crucible of Fire

Winston Churchill described the Battle of El Alamein as the Allies' first significant victory in the Second World War. Saying however it didn't mark the beginning of the end...but at least the end of the beginning! This documentary follows New Zealand veterans of the Battle as they return to Egypt for the 50th Anniversary of the Battle. There's a wealth of archive footage here, much of it shot by the Kiwi soldiers themselves, some very poignant moments, and stories you will not have heard before like how soldiers measure a 100 yard advance under gnufire, and how that can get all messed up in the desert!
Enjoy and share the link. This is a programme I was very proud to create, and one of the last works by cameraman Chris Sara whose life was cut tragically short by a heart condition. Much of the emotion in this film comes through Chris's eye for detail and his insistence on getting the shot. He is still sorely missed.
