The Vought V-173. It was the Flying Pancake - a strange, yet promising experimental test aircraft built for the American Navy fighter program during World War II. The wooden V-173 and its all-metal successor, the XF5U Flying Flapjack, weighing in at five-times the weight, were designed as “all-wing” discs that could, in theory, provide a significant advantage in lift. Powering the airplane were propellers at the edge of the wingtips using two piston engines concealed within the body.
