Is Vung Tau, Vietnam Actually a Good Place to Live? 🇻🇳
Is Vung Tau, Vietnam actually a good place to live? In this video, me and my wife walk along Vung Tau Beach and talk honestly about what life in Vung Tau is really like for expats, teachers, and long-term travelers in Vietnam.
Vung Tau was one of our main getaway spots when we lived and worked in Saigon. We used to come here regularly to escape the noise, traffic, and intensity of Ho Chi Minh City, and even now it still carries a lot of personal history for us.
We break down the pros and cons of living in Vung Tau. On the positive side, it’s close to Saigon, much less polluted than the city, has a slower lifestyle, and is significantly cheaper to live in. There are also some great hiking spots, the nearby hills and monasteries, the whale temple, and a few surprisingly good local food spots. It’s not Vietnam’s best food city or its best beach destination, but it has a quirky charm and a relaxed coastal atmosphere that makes it appealing as a base.
However, we also talk honestly about the downsides. During our walk we noticed visible pollution on the beach, including garbage and construction runoff entering the water, along with dead fish and chemical-looking waste. While it’s still far better than Saigon in terms of air quality and general living conditions, this kind of environmental issue is one of the reasons we personally wouldn’t choose to live there long term.
We also discuss how Vung Tau benefits from its proximity to Saigon, which creates job and teaching opportunities for expats. It’s a place where you can still find work, especially in education, and it can work well as a base if you’re living in Vietnam.
Through Reborn Abroad, we share our experience from years of living across Vietnam and Southeast Asia, helping people navigate teaching jobs, relocation, retirement, and long-term stays with access to real local networks and practical on-the-ground advice.
