WABASH GREEN TOUR 2020
THERES PLENTY AN INDIVIDUAL CAN DO TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF POLLUTION THAT ENTERS STREAMS AND RIVERS.
STAR CITY’S DAVE NORTH SHOWS US SOME RIVER-FRIENDLY PRACTICES GOING ON IN AUGUST.
THE WABASH RIVER GREEN TOUR IS HAPPENING NOW THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH.
THE WABASH RIVER ENHANCEMENT CORPORATIONS AMY KRZTON-PRESSON SAID THEY’VE MADE SOME CHANGES THIS YEAR.
AMY KRZTON-PRESSON SAYS: “This year in response to the pandemic we decided to do a self guided Green Tour. So this lets people go at their pace, visit what they want to, and do this safely.” :13
THE TOUR HIGHLIGHTS 31 SITES AROUND LAFAYETTE AND WEST LAFAYETTE THAT REDUCE POLLUTION BY MANAGING CITY STORMWATER RUNOFF.
AMY KRZTON-PRESSON SAYS: “This ia a rain garden and this was installed by the City of Lafayette to remove the amount of stormwater runoff that’s going in the Wabash River. And also at this location we have pervious pavers all along the edges of the street and that allows stormwater to soak into the ground and also not run off into the Wabash River.” :22
STORMWATER PICKS UP POLLUTANTS WHEN IT TRAVELS OVER HARD SURFACES LIKE STREETS AND PARKING LOTS.
STORMWATER RUNOFF THAT ENTERS THE SEWER SYSTEM CAN GO INTO THE WABASH RIVER UNFILTERED.
AMY KRZTON-PRESSON SAYS: “If we can keep water in place and let it soak into the ground all of those pollutants are going to filter out in the ground and the water will enter our ground water system and recharge our aquifer as opposed to bringing pollutants into the river.” :17
THE TOUR DEMONSTRATES THE WIDE VARIETY OF OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO HELP CURB STORMWATER RUNOFF.
GREEN TOUR VISITORS CAN ENTER TO WIN A PRIZE BY VISITING FIVE SITES OR MORE AND POSTING THE PICTURE TO SOCIAL MEDIA WITH THE HASHTAG WABASH GREEN TOUR 2020.
AMY KRZTON-PRESSON SAYS: “We do have a Google map on our website showing where all the 31 sites are so you can sort of look at the whole map, see if theres anything close to you, if its walkable. We tried to color-code the groups of sites that are close to one another. So all the ones on purdues campus are color-coded. So if you get to campus you could walk to all of those sites.” :19
YOU’LL FIND THE MAP AND MORE INFORMATION ABOUT RIVER FRIENDLY PRACTICES ON THE WEBSITE, WABASH RIVER DOT NET.
