This minecraft freeway tutorial explains how to build a DIVERGING DIAMOND INTERCHANGE, a type of road intersection between an highway and lower road really common in America.
In this intersection two direction of traffic temporarily cross to the left side of the road, between the two intersections with access ramps. It reduce the number of lanes and the cross points of the intersection. The traffic is often regulated by traffic lights.
This type intersection is very rare in Europe, where roundabouts are prefered instead of traffic lights.
