We tested an older J79 this day. It made a lot of black smoke with its old school original combustor liners, and it howled at part power settings due to its original design jet nozzle.
Pilots did not enjoy these characteristics, but plane-spotters do...
Fuel consumption is about 35-40 gallons per minute at full dry power, and the afterburner adds about 50 to that number.
