Science fiction has been “terrible” at making predictions, according to the author and futurist Ramez Naam. It missed the advent of the drone and it fails to see how tech-nology becomes cheaper and decentralised. Experts often exhibit “status-quo bias” and so they underestimate growth.
Technologies, such as self-driving vehicles, electric vehicles and solar power, are now spreading exponentially – much faster than people anticipated – as their costs plummet.
To become “exponential nations”, countries should, Naam said, foster “bottoms-up innovation”, rather than top down, allow people the freedom to fail, have light-touch regulation that allows innovators the space to try things out, and ensure the required data infrastructure is in place.
