State of Abundance: Infinite Resources to Shape the Future, Ramez Naam - WGS 2018
Science fiction has been “terrible” at making predictions, according to the author and futurist Ramez Naam. It missed the advent of the drone and it fails to see how tech-nology becomes cheaper and decentralised. Experts often exhibit “status-quo bias” and so they underestimate growth.
Technologies, such as self-driving vehicles, electric vehicles and solar power, are now spreading exponentially – much faster than people anticipated – as their costs plummet.
To become “exponential nations”, countries should, Naam said, foster “bottoms-up innovation”, rather than top down, allow people the freedom to fail, have light-touch regulation that allows innovators the space to try things out, and ensure the required data infrastructure is in place.

Innovation reduces the need for natural resources by multiplying the value that can be gained from any quantity of that resource. Indeed innovation can be thought of as the one natural resource that we can only ever have more of.
