Sulfur & Zinc: Importance to Maximizing Your Corn Crop Yield
In the next episode of our series on the yield pyramid, Pioneer Field Agronomist Troy Deutmeyer discusses the importance of Sulfur and Zinc to maximizing your corn crop yields. Sulfur is important for photosynthesis, seed production, nitrogen utilization, and nodulation in legumes like soybeans and alfalfa. Sulfur itself is immobile in the plant, so you’ll mostly see symptoms of deficiencies in new leaf growth. Sulfur is leachable, especially during high rainfall, so it’s a nutrient to keep an eye on every year to make sure you aren’t deficient. Troy also recommends planter applied or strip till for sulfur application. Zinc is the most popular micronutritent, as its needed for protein production, hormone regulation, flower formation, germination and vigor, especially early root development. While most crops don’t need a lot of zinc, only ½ a year on average, its very important to maintain your zinc levels every year. Zinc uptake can be inhibited by high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, most commonly in fields that have multiple years of manure applications. Troy also provides application recommendations, as well as recommended levels when for when you test your soil.
