Hi Travis and Suzy, Since we had so much fun doing a 10-track mega-marathon, how about we do another one? This is a lot of fun for me, and I am happy you are having a lot of fun too. So we have done quite a bit of jane's addiction so far, and we still have some more songs to go, but there are some songs of theirs that just stand out from the rest. Here is one of those tracks. To really understand this song, you need some context. As I mentioned in a previous reaction video, "nothing's Shocking" was their first true studio album. We've done "mountain Song" and "Up the beach/Ocean Size" from this album already, but this song is just so killer in so many ways (no pun intended as you will understand pretty quickly). This album was released in 1989, and at the time, all you would seemingly see on TV and in the media was a glorification of sex and violence (hence the title of the album "nothing's shocking). You couldn't turn on the TV without seeing the news covering the latest violence. Famously, I forget who said it, but "if it bleeds, it leads" became a mantra for news coverage of the day. The band chose to expose the hypocrisy of the media and people claiming to be "shocked" by all of the sex and violence. People would complain about the amount of sex and violence on TV, in music, and in film. Yet, these same people would be captivated and fascinated with these same things that they claimed to abhor. This is probably before your time, but 1989 was the year of Ted Bundy, the infamous serial killer who claimed to have murdered more than 30 women during his cross-country crime spree. Once His appeals had run out and he was scheduled to be executed, he started giving lots of media interviews. People were fascinated with the story of Ted, and how a seemingly normal and good-looking man could be so evil and do such horrific things to other people. The guys in jane's addiction decided to write a song about the media and people's fascination with ted bundy, and how this was a damning statement about the state of our culture. In the beginning of the song, you actually hear Ted Bundy's voice in one of the many interviews he gave before his execution, and the lyrics paint a damning picture of just how warped our culture had become at the time. Women were obsessed with him, and TV people could not get enough of time. Ted Bundy equaled ratings. Disgusting I know, but that was the time. Anyway, Sorry for the long explanation, but I think it is important to understand the context of the song to really get it's meaning. The musicianship is off-the-charts amazing as always, but there is a deep and powerful message undernath this amazing track. Hope you like it.
