Grade 6 Aural Tests - Recognition of a Cadence
Recognising a perfect or imperfect cadence at the end of a piece of music. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 6 practical exams. In this aural test, candidates are asked to identify the cadence at the end of a phrase as Perfect or Imperfect. Identifying a cadence as perfect or imperfect is not as hard as you might think. As this video illustrates, a phrase that ends with the tonic or key note in the chord must be perfect. If the tonic is not present in the final chord the cadence must be imperfect. You will learn how to hear this clearly as the video unfolds. The video explores all the options ie V-l for a perfect cadence, l-V, lV-V, or ll-V for an imperfect cadence. Apart from equipping grade 6 students to tackle this aural test, beyond the exam it is most helpful for musicians to become more aware of cadences as punctuation points in the music, helping us to understand the structure of the music we perform and listen to, and assisting us to express more effectively what we perform.
