Miami Beach's $500 million pump system can't stop the ocean — king tides keep flooding paradise.
Miami Beach's pump system is running at full power. The ocean is still winning.
In 2024, Miami Beach declared a state of emergency twice. A June rainstorm dropped seven inches in hours. An October supermoon pushed king tides over the reinforced seawalls. And in December, a satellite study confirmed that 35 buildings along Miami's coastline are sinking into the limestone beneath them. Meanwhile, a March 2024 city engineering report — which received no press release — concluded that Miami Beach needs 83 additional pump stations on top of every station already built. The system meant to solve this problem is, by the city's own engineers' calculation, less than halfway finished.
