Polanyi concludes that the self-regulating market is a myth. In actual fact, the market is prone to such violent fluctuations that state intervention becomes a real and pressing concern of any legislature. Neoliberal economists fail to see that what they consider an anti-liberal conspiracy are just measures by states to ensure that the market economy is able to stabilise and function.
