Alma Cogan. Tennessee Waltz. 'Saturday Club' 1964.
Alma Cogan sings 'Tennessee Waltz' on Saturday Club in 1964 - introduced by the host of the radio show, Brian Matthew.
Firstly, Brian tells Alma about a conversation he had with Chris Curtis (of the pop group The Searchers ) regarding 'Tennessee Waltz' not being a hit. A fan of Alma's had written in to request Alma sing the song for John Lennon on 'Saturday Club', because 'he likes this one'.
Lennon, a big friend of Alma's, had also requested that the record be played when they both appeared on TV's iconic pop programme 'Ready, Steady, Go!'.
'Tennessee Waltz' is a popular country music song with lyrics by Redd Stewart and music by Pee Wee King written in 1946 and first released in January 1948.
The song was popularised and became a multi-million seller by Patti Page in the early 1950s.
In 1964, 'Tennessee Waltz' was recorded in an upbeat style by Alma Cogan. This version failed to chart in the UK, but was No. 1 in Sweden for five weeks and also reached No. 14 in Denmark while a German language rendering reached No. 10 in Germany.
Apologies for the poor quality, this recording is from an old tape.
