“Hello ladies and gentlemen today, I'd like to talk to you about Something a little bit different. I'd like to talk to you about the history of English gardens. How did it all begin? turns out the whole culture of gardening came from Rome first AD with a conquest of Britain Romans brought gardening together with them That is how it started Now the garden we see around us is A traditional English garden, but it wasn't always like this What Romans brought was very very low hedges not as tall as these but low hedges and very geometrical forms, now the idea behind low hedges was that so that you could see statues and You could see the whole geometrical party Around the garden. That is the beginning Then medieval times Brought something a little bit different which was medicinal gardens Those were monastic gardens. They were grown in very enclosed spaces in cloisters of monasteries now one could argue that whether they were gardens in the first place or not because they were focusing on Herbs of medicinal nature they were very much like kitchen gardens one could argue if they are gardens on a first place so that is the medieval period then came the Tudors Tutors were again very very much influenced by Italians so we can see the geometry coming back after Tudors came Stewarts and Stewarts were famous for adopting French influence which included long avenues usually on front gardens of Mansions, so then again, it was very very geometrical So those were Stewart's heavily influenced by the French Afterwards a gentleman called Lancelot Capability Brown came on to the gardening scene. He was a very extraordinary gentleman the name Capability came From actually came from his clients because he kept saying your garden has a capability Your garden has a capability and what he came up with Eventually became a very sort of Quintessential English thing in terms of gardening He decided to Move away from the the whole geometry and he decided to introduce a plane lawn Just a simple plane lawn like we see around me right now with clusters of trees with little streams running through and the idea behind it was to create a natural garden the garden that feels like it's woodland, but still very managed still very artificial but in a natural way if you know what I mean, so that was that Was his great influence. So what happened afterwards? Victorians That was the great era when the gardens were open to general public. They became a thing of a social enjoyment and This is pretty much what we've got right now Now we have a bit of a mix of everything but Victorians were the first ones to introduce gardens to public turn it into public spaces Thank you very much for joining me today.
