Dame Maggie Smith, well-known for her roles in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, dies aged 89

British actress, Dame Maggie Smith, has died at the age of 89.

A legend of stage and screen, she was well-known for her prominent roles in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. But it was her performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie that won her international fame, as well as an Oscar.

The Prime Minister has led tributes to her, calling her "a true national treasure". Her sons said she died in hospital this morning and was with friends and family at the end.
