Mona’s owner shakes due to medical reasons and this makes the step up difficult for her to use because she feels as though the bird Mona doesn’t want to step onto her because she doesn’t feel balanced. Luckily, these birds are DESIGNED for balance! Between flying in the air and balancing on branches getting blown around in the wind, these birds know how to balance when they’ve got their wings intact. Mona’s owner REALLY wants Mona to fly but has NEVER seen her fly, not even when startled. She also had a vet mention the possibility of arthritis in the wing… whenever you have an older bird who has NEVER flown before, you never want to just start flight training as it can be painful to the bird to build these muscles unexpectedly under these conditions. Instead, please get a thorough vet exam with x-rays to ensure you know what you’re dealing with medically if anything at all. If all is clear, definitely begin your training. If it’s not, make sure you understand your bird’s limitations before beginning.

Some birds don’t receive enough sunlight as they develop which can cause issues of the spine and other parts of the body to not develop properly or become fused together. Sometimes flight is impossible due to this, and sometimes it causes mild arthritis that can be managed with pain medication.

Use this technique if you have an older bird who has NEVER flown:

Place 3 foraging trees together, touching, in a triangle type shape. Make sure one has fresh water, one has fresh food and the other has toys and things to do on it. The bird should enjoy going to all of them and climbing around to get the things it needs on a daily basis.

At a speed you feel your bird will accept yet go unnoticed, move the trees apart. An example would be to start this with the trees together for a week to get your bird accustomed to the idea. After a week, move them apart about an inch. The bird should still be able to walk to each stand, over time you will gradually move the trees further and further apart to where the bird has to get creative to get to each one by hopping, jumping, leaning or taking biiiiig steps. Eventually the bird will learn to use FLIGHT as a means of transportation… when a bird learns that, it’s ready to begin flight training!

Using this method allows the bird to work at its own pace, and slowly build its muscles and confidence in the process. Because this is usually a big deal for a bird with no experience, you are not associated with it as the bird works on it on its own.
