If you love watching the Gorilla, get to the Gladys Porter Zoo, Brownsville, Texas
So, we finally got to see the Western Lowland Gorilla at the Brownsville Zoo, and wow—what an experience! These guys are massive, but at the same time, there’s something kind of peaceful about them. Just watching them move, sit, and munch on their food made us feel a weird mix of awe and sadness. They belong in the dense, wild rainforests of Central Africa—places like the Republic of Congo, Gabon, and Cameroon—not in an enclosure.
They’re super important to their ecosystem, spreading seeds and keeping the forest alive, but their numbers are dropping fast thanks to habitat destruction, hunting, and diseases like Ebola. Seeing one up close was amazing, but it also made us think about how much danger they’re in. It’s crazy to realize that such a powerful, beautiful creature is critically endangered.
