Marian Anderson sings "Hear de lam's a-cryin'" (spiritual) in studio and on the stage

American contralto Marian Anderson excelled in the spirituals of her homeland. The simple beauty and devoted expressivity of those songs matched perfectly the emotional depth and the warmth and smoothness of her voice. One of the favorite spirituals sung by Anderson is "Hear de lam's a-cryin'".

That song has a simple melody that happens to be just ideal for the words set to music and for the natural combination of human emotions and a religious, solemn atmosphere.

Here you may hear two of Anderson's renditions of that song: the first is her official recording made in 1947 with Franz Rupp at the piano; and the second is an in-house recording made at the Teatro Colón, in Buenos Aires, in August 23th 1950. In studio or live, she employs her inner sensitivity to song and her great low register to amazing effect.

LYRICS

You hear de lambs a-cryin', hear de lambs a-cryin',
hear de lambs acryin', oh, shepherd, feed-a my sheep.

My savior spoke these words so sweet.
oh, shepherd, feed-a my sheep.
Saint Peter if you love me feed my sheep.
oh shepherd feed-a my sheep.

Oh my Lord I love thee thou dost know.
oh, shepherd, feed-a my sheep.
Oh, give me grace to love Thee more.
oh, shepherd, feed-a my sheep.
