The Counselor Closest to This Boy Looked at Him That Day and Saw Nothing Wrong | Pt 11
No one at Richneck spent more one-on-one time with this six-year-old than his counselor. On January 6, he looked right at the boy and saw a calm child.
L. Ellis Rawls was the school counselor assigned to work one-on-one with the boy the court calls JT. Morning sessions, behavior plans, the student support team that tracked him. If anyone in that building knew this child, it was Rawls. The state called him for one specific piece of its case. Rawls is the fourth warning. On January 6, a student came to him upset about JT, and Rawls went straight to Dr. Ebony Parker and asked for permission to search the boy. Parker told him to wait for the parent.
So watch the cross, because this is where Rawls becomes the most important witness the defense has put up. After hearing that concern, Rawls did not just walk away. He went and put his own eyes on JT in the classroom. And what he saw was a boy who was calm. Unusually calm. Rawls testifies he had no concern at all, that he was at peace when he left that room, that he thought the lockdown was a drill. The man who knew this child best looked right at him and saw nothing wrong.
The state still has its warning. Watch Rawls say, plainly, that he wishes he had done something differently that day. Both of those things are now in front of the jury, and both sides will reach for this witness when they argue this case to a close.

9:09 to 13:14 - January 6. A student comes to Rawls upset about JT. Rawls goes straight to Dr. Parker and asks to search the boy. Parker tells him to wait for the parent. This is the state's fourth warning.
13:14 to 14:54 - Asked if he wishes he had done something differently that day, Rawls says yes.
14:54 to 24:31 - Defense cross, and the turn. After hearing the concern, Rawls went and looked at JT himself. The boy was calm, unusually so. Rawls says he had no concern, and thought the lockdown was a drill.
24:31 to 29:53 - The defense lands it. Rawls agrees the backpack was searched and nothing was found, and that he did not believe there was any credible threat.
