Child of Wonder (From the Sacred Veil)

A rehearsal last week with the fantastic Bob Cole Chamber Choir from Cal State Long Beach. (Their brilliant conductor Jonathan Talberg graciously let me lead his group).

Child of Wonder is the last movement of The Sacred Veil, a twelve movement work that I wrote with poet Charles Anthony (Tony) Silvestri. For this final movement I wrote the poetry for this final movement myself, a simple benediction for my brother Tony and his late wife Julie. The poem is printed in full below.

Child of wonder
Child of sky
Time to end your voyage
Time to die.

Weary waters beckon
Dark and deep
Child of soft surrender
Child of sleep.

Child of sorrow
Child of rain
There is no tomorrow
No more pain.

Turn your silvered sails
Toward the light
Child of mourning
Child of night.

Child of iridescence
Child of dream
Stars and moons will guide you
Down the stream.

Stretched on ocean waves
Exchanging foam
Welcome home my child
Welcome home.
