How to secure your intercostal catheter/chest tube

Securely attaching your chest tube to your patient is crucial in prevention of infectious complications and to prevent accidental dislodgement.

A chest drain that can move in and out of the chest can track bacteria into the chest cavity, and cause an empyema. This video shows a method to prevent this happening.

Also shown is a method to secure the tube to the chest wall using a sleek-tape mesentery, which prevents traction on the tube or the sutures/dressing holding it in place.
