The Praise of Folly (1509) by Desiderius Erasmus
A key link between Renaissance humanism and the Protestant Reformation, the Praise of Folly is one of the greatest masterpieces of satire in western literature. It is most famous for its merciless attacks on corruption within the Roman Catholic Church, but its humor is comprehensive to all foibles of humanity. Erasmus speaks not-so-subtly through the female personification of Folly, though how much of his speech is sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek is more difficult to decipher.
