Iran has ‘fanned the flames’ of religious conflicts in the Middle East

Israel Ambassador to Australia Amir Maimon has accused Iran of “fanning the flames” of religious and sectarian conflicts in the Middle East to expand its influence.

More than 200 people were kidnapped from southern Israel when Hamas unleashed its surprise attack on October 7, killing more than 1,400 Israelis.

Only days after the attack on Israel, Iran’s foreign minister met with leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah in Beirut, according to the Israeli Ambassador.

“The international community should and must begin to hold Iran to account, not only for the repression it inflicts on its own people but also for the way it undermines peace in the region,” he said during a National Press Club address.

Mr Maimon also accused Iran of becoming the “patron” of terrorist proxy groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
