World's first grid-scale Cryogenic Energy Storage System launch

On the 5th of June 2018, Highview Power launched the first grid-scale, grid-connected cryogenic energy storage system in Bury, Manchester.

Developed by Highview Power in partnership with recycling and renewable energy company Viridor, the cryogenic energy storage plant feeds energy into the local grid by storing liquid air and turning it back into a gas.

Long-duration energy storage addresses challenges of rising energy demand by helping to balance the grid, and enable greater adoption of renewable energies. The development of the technology has been supported by the UK government, with Professor John Loughhead, Chief Scientific Advisor at BEIS, officially switching on the plant.
