Reference Terminology Server: Centralizing Medical Terminologies for Improved Integration in Spain

Recorded October 24, 2024 at SNOMED CT Expo 2024 in Seoul, Korea.

202442 The Reference Terminology Server: Centralizing Medical Terminologies for Improved Healthcare System Integration in Spain - Ricardo Aznar Olmos (ES)

The Terminology Reference Server (strSNS) is a fundamental innovation for the Spanish National Health System. Managed by the Spanish National Reference Center and activated by the Ministry of Health, strSNS uses the Snowstorm system, an open-source tool from SNOMED International, to make available to all organizations and users the reference resources that are used nationally in the health system.
Built on snowstorm, and based on ElasticSearch, it can handle complex searches and manage extensive data, enhancing integration between systems. strSNSNS is not limited to SNOMED CT, but includes a range of medical resources such as ICD-10, ICPC-2 and LOINC. The server is designed for direct interaction, allowing users to download content or query data via REST API or FHIR API services.
Its adaptive framework ensures that it remains relevant through the addition of new catalogs and supports data-driven medicine by enabling seamless access to up-to-date medical terms, thus improving workflow and healthcare delivery.
