Researchers in Hong Kong are reporting the first confirmed case of reinfection with the coronavirus. “An apparently young and healthy patient had a second case of Covid-19 infection which was diagnosed 4.5 months after the first episode,” University of Hong Kong researchers said Monday in a statement. The 33-year-old man had only mild symptoms the first time, and no symptoms this time around. The reinfection was discovered when he returned from a trip to Spain, the researchers said, and the virus they sequenced closely matched the strain circulating in Europe in July and August. The report is of concern because it suggests that immunity to the coronavirus may last only a few months in some people and researchers were hoping that there was a longer lasting immunity after someone got the virus of a few years. This has implications for vaccines being developed for the virus and could pose a threat moving forward

Republicans are focused right now on the party convention unfolding this week at which President Trump fill formally be renominated to be the party’s standard-bearer in this fall’s presidential election, so it’s a good bet the coming days likely won’t be the best opportunity for bipartisan productivity in Congress. That means, unfortunately, Americans will have to wait even longer for the prospect of congressional leaders approving funding for new stimulus check coronavirus relief payments. However we do have specific details on a timeline for the next relief package. Congressional leaders could have an agreement on a new COVID-19 stimulus package by Sept. 30, U.S. Fourth District Congressman Tom Cole said. This is a very important date because Congress has to come to an agreement to pass more funding for the Federal government by September 30th or else we would have a government shutdown. Government shutdowns in the United States occur when there is a failure to pass funding legislation to finance the government for its next fiscal year or a temporary funding measure which ends on September 30th. During a government shutdown, the government stops all “non-essential” services, while essential services, such as the armed forces, border protection, air traffic controllers, and police and fire departments, will continue to operate.

Cole explained how he believes an agreement on stimulus funding will definitely occur before September 30th. He explained how he “thought we would have an agreement before now,” but now the next logical timeframe is Sept. 30, when Congress will have to put a Continuing Resolution in place to keep government operating through the end of the year. “That’s a must-pass piece of legislation,” on September 30th and he explained that “if we want to come to a deal, that’s where we can attach things that will pass. He goes on to say that he“thinks it would be a gigantic mistake for Congress to go home at the end of September without another relief package. It is political malpractice on both sides.” He said there already is agreement on $100 billion in funding for schools and one-time direct $1200 check to households making less than $100,000 a year and those are things we can look to be included.
