World Cup could keep Rhode Island bars open until 4 a.m. — if they want to

Some Rhode Island bars and restaurants could serve customers later than ever during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Gov. Dan McKee signed legislation Friday allowing cities and towns to extend bar and restaurant hours during the tournament. Under the law, local licensing boards can permit businesses to remain open until 4 a.m. and serve alcohol until 3 a.m. between June 11 and July 3.

Supporters say the move could help Rhode Island capitalize on the economic impact of the world's largest sporting event. Several World Cup matches will be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, just a short drive from Rhode Island.
