By 1926, the Ford Model T — which had dominated American car sales for eighteen years — was losing market share rapidly to General Motors. Alfred Sloan's GM strategy of annual model updates and colour variety was directly undermining Ford's single-model, single-colour approach. Henry Ford refused to acknowledge the problem. His son Edsel Ford spent three years arguing internally for a new model. Henry dismissed every proposal. When Ford's market share collapsed from 55% in 1921 to 30% by 1926, Henry Ford was finally forced to act. The Model T production line was shut down in May 1927 — the first time it had stopped since 1908. The replacement — the Model A — was designed substantially by Edsel Ford against his father's preferences. Henry Ford approved it reluctantly. The Model A restored Ford's market position within two years. Edsel Ford designed the car that saved his father's company. Henry Ford never publicly acknowledged his son's contribution. Edsel died in 1943 — before his father.
