Why Your Mediterranean Diet Doesn’t Have to Be Organic to Be Healthy
If you’ve seen headlines about the Mediterranean diet and pesticides lately, you might be confused about where the science stands on this time-honored eating pattern.
These headlines are based on a small, 2 week study that measures the pesticide residue in adults who followed different diets. It found that people who are more fruits and vegetables were exposed to more pesticides.
But here’s the ridiculous part: now, headlines are suggesting it’s healthier to eat a conventional Western diet—full of highly processed foods—than a Mediterranean diet.
The truth is, decades of research prove the benefits of a Mediterranean-style diet high in fruits, vegetables, seafood, and whole grains.
If you can choose organic food, great—you may reduce your exposure to pesticides. But if organic fruits and vegetables aren’t in your budget, it’s still better to choose less processed, fresh foods than highly processed foods.
Bottom line: sensationalist articles are the real threat to public health—not the increased pesticide exposure from eating more fruits and vegetables.
