How to Piece and Prepare the Backing Fabric for Your Quilt (Ep. 205)

We start off this video with examples of good and bad backing choices.

Go to your fabric stash and make a selection. Piece the backing using a light-colored thread and smaller than normal stitch length - right sides together, along the selvage edge. Then cut into the edge and rip off the selvage along the length of grain.

You will want to use a big board to press your backing fabric. Use Mary Ellen's Best Press when pressing the center seam open. This way you only have two layers of fabric. Then completely press the entire backing fabric. Spray sizing on the backing fabric makes the quilting easier. (Use a less expensive spray sizing for this)

This is part of lesson 7 in Nancy's "Learning to Quilt" curriculum.
