Leningrad Isolated, Moscow in Hitler's Sights - Eastern Front DOCUMENTARY

Obscure archive historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II continues with Operation Barbarossa — the largest invasion in history.

In our previous episodes, we explored the catastrophic Soviet defeats and rapid German advances during August 1941, including the immense Red Army losses, the fate of prisoners of war, and the brutal battles around Smolensk, Leningrad, and Kyiv. (Watch here: • Zhukov, Guderian and the race to Kyiv)

Now, as September 1941 begins, the war enters a new and devastating phase.

In the north, Army Group North closes in on Leningrad, severing the last land and rail connections and plunging the city into a deadly siege.

In the center, Field Marshal von Bock struggles to hold the Yelna salient, as Zhukov launches one of the Red Army’s first successful counteroffensives. The liberation of Yelna comes at enormous cost, but marks a turning point for Soviet morale.

Meanwhile, Hitler issues War Directive No. 35, signaling the renewed push toward Moscow, even as the Wehrmacht strains under attrition.

In the south, Guderian’s daring drive threatens Kyiv, but his overstretched flanks reveal dangerous vulnerabilities. Rundstedt’s forces fight bloody battles across the Dnipro, suffering heavy losses at Dnepropetrovsk.

The late summer rains and rising casualties slow down the once unstoppable blitzkrieg, foreshadowing the grinding war of attrition that lies ahead.

📌 Stay tuned as we continue to follow the Eastern Front Week-by-Week, uncovering the strategies, battles, and human cost of World War II.
