Pipeline On Rails - La Mesa Model Railroad Club

Southern Pacific’s unit oil trains operated every day except for Christmas between Saco north of Bakersfield to Dolores in the city of Carson for processing at the Shell refinery. It reliably operated with afternoon departures from either location. Empties from Dolores would rarely be seen during daylight hours between Mojave and Bakersfield with some exceptions. The loaded ‘cans’ would leave Bakersfield in the midafternoon with a swing helper set in place.

Replicating the prototype, these trainsets are in 6 cuts of 8 vs. 6 cuts of 12. Helpers would be placed behind the fourth set.

Operating these trains 72 cars long would look out of proportion as the La Mesa Model Railroad Club is a scaled down version of the line between Bakersfield and Mojave. The prototype distance is 68 mile, whereas the club is 35 scale miles.
