A Venus Flytrap Counts Touches Before It Eats

One touch is not enough for a Venus flytrap to waste a bite.
This carnivorous plant waits for the right signals before committing to a meal.

Inside each trap are tiny trigger hairs. A first touch creates an electrical signal, but the leaf usually waits. A second touch soon after makes the trap snap shut, and continued movement from the insect triggers a tighter seal and digestive juices.

It is not thinking, but it is using a built-in counting system to avoid closing on rain, dust, or false alarms. What other plant behavior looks impossible until you learn how it works? Tell us in the comments.
