Lipolysis (Fat Burning) | Biochemistry

#lipolysis #biochemistry #fatloss

Lipolysis is the breakdown of fat for energy. Fat which is stored in the adipose tissue in the form of triglyceride breaks down into glycerol and fatty acids. Gylcerol is metabolism mainly in the liver with the enzyme glycerol kinase to glycerol-3-phosphate and further converted to Dihydroxyacetone phospahte (DHAP) with the glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme. DHAP is an intermediate in glycolysis. Glycolysis is conversion of glucose to pyruvate to make Acetyl CoA which enters the Krebs Cycle to produce ATP(energy). Fatty acids enter into the blood and is supplied to several tissues of the body to produce energy through beta-oxidation by formaing Acetyl CoA. Except for brain and RBCs the rest of the body can use the energy through fat through beta oxidation. Breakdown of fat to use it as a source of fuel for energy is lipolysis. The lipolysis metabolism and their respective metabolic pathways gives us a thorough understanding of breaking and using of fat for energy. Fat is very energy dense and provides double the amount of energy compared to carbohydrates.
