Scotland's NORTH COAST 500 in 6 days!

Scotland's North Coast 500 is a scenic driving route through the remote Northern Highlands, that winds across small, often single track roads for 500 miles in a circular route.

Six days was barely enough time to see everything that the 500 miles (800 km) of North Coast had to offer. Our average driving speed for the whole period was only 40 km/h, and there were plenty of stops for photo opportunities. We spent nights in a series of small towns and villages: Letters on the shores of Loch Broom, Talmine where our accommodation was a converted byre (cow shed), and Thurso where we took a break from Scottish food and went out for Indian (anyone for salmon tikka masala)?

Along the way there were crumbling castle ruins, glorious Caribbean-blue oceans and white sand beaches, waterfalls and sea caves. We bagged a second Munro at Ben Hope, stopped for the obligatory photo opportunity under the sticker covered signpost at John ‘o Groats and visited Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of the UK.

The NC500 is a wonderful way to experience parts of Scotland that until recently have been little visited. Get there soon before the secret is out, and make sure to spend a few days where you aren't moving from one stop to another to ensure that you have time to slow down and explore local life!
