Zinc Plating at Home - Sandblasting and plating Jeep parts
In this video Ingo through all of the steps I used to restore the Jeep Wagoneer door latches.
The video is long. Lots of trials. But I hope you get something out of it. I was nervous, but ended up really nice.
I used my DIY sandblaster, then through my Zinc plating setup.
My first time with this process. I ended up doing one part over because I didn't clean it well enough. I also experimented with two different power supplies. The first was a 1.1 amp charger. The second, a car battery charger. The big one was much better with larger surfaces. At one point I had all 4 latches in.
I did two rounds, polishing the zinc with steel wool between, then Yellow chromating.
I purchased the chromate from Caswell. The acid was from Lowe's. The vinegar from the grocery store, as was the Epsom Salt (make sure its plain). I did not use any brightener or sugar. If I need to do any fine parts, I will need to refine this process. Will need to do more cleaning, more degreasing, more Sandblasting... but for functional parts, they came out great. What do you think?
