🐴 DRAFT HORSE with STRINGHALT gets a relaxing Chiropractic Adjustment!

King has Stringhalt. Stringhalt is a sudden flexion of one or both hind legs in the horse, most easily seen while the horse is walking or trotting. It is most evident when the horse is backing up slowly, turning on the affected leg, or suddenly frightened. It can involve one or both hind legs of the horse.
King was rescued from an owner that wasn't financially or physically able to care for him. A good samaritan connected them to Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue Farm! When they acquired King, he was in a neglected state.

DressageToday.com explains it well:
Stringhalt is an abnormal gait in horses, described as a sudden and exaggerated flexion of one or both rear limbs. There are two forms of stringhalt. One is called Australian stringhalt. The other is called classic stringhalt. Australian stringhalt affects both rear limbs simultaneously. It typically occurs in outbreaks among pastured horses who are consuming the noxious weed Hypochoerris radicata, commonly known as flatweed. Compounds in flatweed apparently affect some of the long sensory nerves to the horse’s rear limbs. Flatweed is native to Australia, but has been introduced to the U.S., and outbreaks here have been reported. Fortunately, the symptoms of Australian stringhalt typically resolve when the horse is removed from affected pastures.
TheHorse.com explains it this way:
Stringhalt seems to make horses yank their legs up and halt them there momentarily before taking their next step. This is the outward sign of neurologic disease, sometimes caused by toxicity, sometimes of unknown origin. If time doesn’t cure it, the prognosis is poor. But today researchers are hard at work looking into ways to make horses with the condition safe, happy, and free of clinical signs.
Stringhalt appears to be an age-old disease in horses and other hooved animals. Descriptions of the disease date back to the Renaissance. William Shakespeare has even been credited for the name of the disease (as a variation of the term "springhalt," from Henry VIII).

Dr. Doug did not cure King of Stringhalt, but he believes that removing stress off the nervous system with a conservative and safe chiropractic is helpful to all living mammals.

Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue was formed to facilitate the rescue of Draft and Draft Cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.

The Primary Function of the Rescue
GGDHR promotes the benefits and uses of Draft horses of all breeds as trail mounts, schooling mounts, and competition mounts. We educate the public through the use of brochures, pamphlets, and public presentations on the topics of: horse slaughter and cruelty, the responsibilities of horse ownership, the over-population and over-breeding of horses, and how over-breeding contributes to the horse slaughter industry. Learn more about our educational outreach here.

Slaughter is a highly profitable market and most of the public is unaware that the buyers for the slaughterhouses frequent public auctions to purchase their horses. We attend the same public auctions, choose the Draft horses we feel are the most viable candidates for rescue, and then outbid the meat buyer.

GGDHR is primarily funded by adoption fees, private donations, and sponsorships which facilitate the rescue of future draft horses from slaughter.
