How to choose SUNSCREENS?
What is the BEST SUNSCREEN?

Sunscreen forms the basis of skin care. It is the foundation of skin care. If there is one skin care product I can use, only one, sunscreen is it. Sunscreen can reduce pigmentation, reduce harmful UVA rays that promote skin cancer cells, collagen breakdown and solar elastosis. UV also generates free radicals that damage skin by altering the DNA. Why use free radical scavengers such as vitamin C, B and E when a good sunscreen can reduce the production of free radicals by as much as 95%? Prevention is the key to awesome skin.

Sunscreens are extremely complex to understand, as they consists of many particles, and chemicals. This formulation depends on the TGA- Australian regulatory boards, the FDA in the United States and in Europe the CE Board. OK, it’s a little more complex than physical vs chemical sunscreens as many countries allow hybrid sunscreens- namely chemical as well as physical nanoparticles like zinc or titanium. To date, the regulatory boards only measure burn time or the SPF of sunscreens, not the UVA protection. In general, physical sunscreens offer more UVA protection, however brands such as La Roche with their Anthelios XL do offer high UVA protection. Avobenzone is another chemical that offers long wave protection for your skin.

Here are my tips for the optimal sunscreen.

1. Firstly, pick a sunscreen that is cosmetically elegant. This means that you are going to enjoy using it. Skin is as individual as you are, so I can not recommend one particular brand. In general Invisible Zinc is cosmetically elegant and favoured by many. So are sunscreens from La Roche Posay.
2. Secondly, always use a hat or physical barrier as adjunctive sun protection. Even the best sunscreens do not protect against long, long wave UVA and visble light.
3. Thirdly apply frequently- twice a day if possible. Even more if you are going to the beach, surfing, or exercising outdoors.
4. Fourthly- use the correct amount. 5 Grams needed to cover the face, ears, neck and part of your décolletage. Physical sunscreen offer immediate protection, chemical sunscreens require application 20 minutes before UV exposure.

If you ever consult me for conditions like melasma, sun spots, pigmentation, ethnic skin rejuvenation or ablative laser lifts I do apologize in advance for nagging about the importance of sunscreen use, after all it is the foundation of all things I laser. Thank you Dr Gillian Murphy for teaching me photobiology in my junior years, much appreciated as you are a fantastic mentor, and someone I always aspired to become professionally.
